Outline
Hanacreek Residence, Hanazono, Niseko
Located at Hanacreek, a resort estate in Hanazono also designed by Riccardo Tossani Architecture, the residence is nestled in a picturesque valley between undulating hills and a forested creek. The form of the residence with its sublime, curved roof and bold, serrated concrete base reflects the sharp environmental contrasts in this alpine setting: the rolling hills of Niseko and the harsh, volcanic geology of this variable terrain.
Cathedral and wrap-around windows in the open living, dining and kitchen space exploit mountain, forest and river panoramas. The timber-clad vaulted ceiling rises from the fireplace wall to nearly 6 meters, then slopes down over the kitchen and master suite for a more intimate atmosphere. Fireplaces adorn both the living room and master bedroom. The upper level is clad in weathered ceramic shingles and sits on a solid canted base.
Contained within the entry-level base is a hot spring (Onsen) spa with outside bath (Rotenburo), two guest rooms and a second master bedroom as well as garage. The earth-toned concrete pedestal base elevates the structure above the deep snowline, conceals all utility equipment and provides a visual buffer and threshold to the street.
